What is Botox?
Botox is a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smooth, rejuve-nated and more youthful appearance. The name alone, Botox, is an implication of the true nature of the substance: Botulinum toxin type A. It is a non-surgical way to reduce or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet, neck bands and other wrinkles.
How does Botox works?
When the toxin is injected into the muscle, it works to block the nerve impulses, temporarily relaxing the muscles that causes wrinkles. Once the muscles are relaxed, you cannot contract them, so the lines gradually smoothen out from disuse, and new creases are prevented from forming. Botox will not “freeze” your facial expressions, it merely softens them, and because it works on specific areas other muscles like those used to raise the eyebrows are not affected, so a natural expression is maintained. The net result is that the process of wrinkle formation is reduced. A smoothing effect is seen almost immediately and it continues to improve over the next few days.
What is the treatment like?
First, the doctor will determine where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles in your brow area. The location, size, and use of the muscle that create a furrowed brow vary markedly among individuals.
Botox is then been injected with a very tiny needle. The injected Botox attaches itself to nerve endings. Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine, causing the muscle to become relaxed. Normally no anesthesia is required, although your doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Most patients compare the sensation to a pin prick.
What can I expect after the treatment?
Botox treatment lasts for only a few minutes, and no recovery time is needed. You may resume normal activity immediately. You may see a marked improve-ment in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows within a matter of 2 to 3 days. Improvement may continue for as long as a month, and could last from 4 to 8 months. However, results are known to vary from person to person depending on their medical history and lifestyle.
Are there any side effects?
As with any medicine, there are some possible side effects to Botox. Fortunately, not everyone who takes Botox Injections will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, they are minor and either requires no treatment or is easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. Less common Botox risks like redness that are generally associated with the injection normally subsides within a few days.
Is it safe?
Botox treatments are very safe and effective. It is highly advisable that you only receive Botox injections from an experienced, qualified and board certified doctor.
Who are the right candidates for Botox Injection?
Botox is regarded by some as the ultimate fountain of youth has been used for wrinkle treatment since the early 1990’s and no serious side effects have been documented. However it doesn’t mean that the treatment is right for everyone! Botox can be used by anyone in good health and does not use drugs in any form. However, it is recommended for those who are between the ages of 16 and 65. Although there is no evidence to suggest Botox could harm an unborn child, it is always recom-mended that pregnant women, or women who are breastfeeding, should avoid having Botox Injections.
